Is the Hawaii Convention Center Open? A Planner's Guide to the 2026–2027 Renovation

Yes, on a modified schedule. Through 2027 the Hawaii Convention Center hosts events on weekday evenings after 5:30 p.m. and all day on weekends, with ballrooms and the rooftop closed and no public parking. It is scheduled to reopen fully in January 2028. Multi-hotel programs and good shuttles fill the gap.

Key takeaways

  • The center stays open on a modified schedule through 2027.
  • Weekday events start after 5:30 p.m. Weekends and qualifying holiday weekends can run all day.
  • Bookable space is Exhibit Halls I–III and mauka third-floor rooms. Ballrooms and the rooftop are closed.
  • There is no public parking. A large citywide uses an open-air trolley circulator from key hotels.
  • Full reopening is scheduled for January 2028, on a schedule dated December 2025 that can change.

Is the Hawaii Convention Center open during the renovation?

Yes, on a modified schedule. The Hawaii Tourism Authority page, schedule dated December 2025, says the center is open on weekday evenings after 5:30 p.m., on weekends, and on three-day holiday weekends that fall on a Monday or Friday. Construction continues during events. The Meet Hawaii construction FAQ, updated December 15, 2025, matches those windows and says they can change.

Meet Hawaii adds a rule: no one-day weekday event if a holiday falls on a weekday. Confirm that date with the convention center.

The events calendar, checked October 26, 2026, lists programs into 2027. HTA release 25-03 (April 9, 2025) said local events would continue, with scheduling adjusted to construction.

When does the Hawaii Convention Center reopen fully?

January 2028. The Hawaii Tourism Authority lists that reopening on a construction schedule dated December 2025, after project completion in November 2027. The Meet Hawaii construction FAQ, updated December 15, 2025, says the transformed space reopens for events in early 2028, and that the dates can change. Check the HTA renovation page before you hold a 2028 date.

Which spaces can you still book at the Hawaii Convention Center?

Exhibit Halls I, II, and III and mauka-side third-floor meeting rooms. The Hawaii Tourism Authority page, as of December 2025, lists those as available and lists makai-side third-floor rooms, the fourth-floor ballrooms, and the rooftop garden as not available. Meet Hawaii's FAQ, updated December 15, 2025, lists rooms 301–313 open, subject to availability, and rooms 314–328 closed.

Meet Hawaii also says the lobby stays open, areas near 1801 Café and some escalators may be blocked, and some escalators are unavailable in 2026 and 2027. The center confirms the hold. See the Oahu venue guide if the ballrooms will not fit.

Is there parking at the Hawaii Convention Center right now?

No. There is no public parking. The Hawaii Tourism Authority page says so. The events calendar says the garage is used for construction staging, with limited stalls for weekend events only on a case-by-case basis. Meet Hawaii's FAQ, updated December 15, 2025, says public parking ended beginning January 5, 2026, because the garage is a construction storage area.

The authority page points readers to an off-site parking map. A Waikiki hotel block still needs Hawaii Convention Center shuttle planning.

How do you run a Honolulu conference while the convention center is limited?

Use the evening and weekend windows, split the meeting across Waikiki hotels, or move sessions to another venue. An HTA release dated April 9, 2025 said the authority was working with citywide organizers on alternative dates and venues in Hawaii. Moving people between hotels and rooms is the hard part. That is the transportation and staffing plan Oahu Genius builds.

Planners often call that split a mini-wide. Conference logistics scopes it. The Honolulu conference guide covers dates, hotels, and staffing.

Will construction noise affect my event?

Yes, when the program overlaps weekday daytime construction. Official pages say noisy work runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Meet Hawaii's FAQ, updated December 15, 2025, says construction is not paused for events. Weekday events start after 5:30 p.m. The pages disagree on the morning start, so this guide says daytime on weekdays and prints no start time.

Weekday move-in is after 5:30 p.m., through the loading docks only, and must be coordinated with the Hawaii Convention Center team. An earlier exception needs the general manager's approval. Rehearsals start after 5:30 p.m. as well.

Running a multi-hotel conference in Waikiki instead

With the ballrooms and rooftop closed, keep a plenary in the halls that remain bookable and place breakouts in Waikiki hotel meeting rooms. Hotel rooms are not limited to the center's evening and weekend windows.

Pacifichem, December 15–20, 2025, ran before this renovation and is the published multi-hotel pattern. Read Pacifichem.

Hospitality desks, wayfinding, and registration can be staffed with the loops. Bilingual staff are sourced as needed. Staffing is quoted with the vehicles when the program needs both. Oahu Genius is the only known Hawaii-based DMC that owns and operates its own transportation and is federally licensed to train CDL drivers. It is also the single point of contact with every major transportation company statewide.

What's the best way to move attendees between hotels and the Hawaii Convention Center?

An open-air trolley circulator. For a large citywide or a Hawaii Convention Center program, Oahu Genius leans toward a hop-on, hop-off loop from key hotels that runs throughout the day. In our experience, the open-air trolley saves about 5 minutes on average at each load and unload stop, which allows more rotations per vehicle. Moving attendees is faster and smoother.

A center drop-off still has to meet the evening or weekend window. Pacifichem is the proof: trolley and motorcoach loops between Waikiki hotels and the center.

To size that hotel-to-center loop, see how many buses a group on Oahu needs.

Getting attendees to HCC with no on-site parking

With no public parking, the circulator is a contracted loop, timed to the center's window. ADA-accessible vehicles are available. Hawaii Convention Center shuttle planning scopes the loop. Group transportation covers the manifest.

Load-in is separate from the guest loop. Weekday freight uses the docks after 5:30 p.m. unless the center approves an earlier exception.

Planning for 2028 and later

Confirm which rooms are back before you announce a full-building program. The January 2028 authority date and Meet Hawaii's early-2028 line can both change.

Any lead time is accepted. More lead time is always better, especially while the 2026–2027 windows apply. The desk is open 24/7/365 at 808-799-5747 or lawrence@oahugenius.com. Request a custom quote with the dates, the headcount, and the hotel list.

Proof

Pacifichem ran before this renovation, on December 15–20, 2025: more than 10,000 attendees, sessions at the Hawaii Convention Center and three Waikiki hotels, with Oahu Genius running trolley and motorcoach loops and providing registration staff, ASL interpreters, and an opening-reception cultural program.
